Garage Door Opener Valley Village

Project Description

Fixxed Garage Doors responded to a resident’s request for a garage door opener repair in Valley Village, CA. The client’s garage door would not open with the remote or even manually. When we inspected the opener, it was clear that the problem was with the gear and sprocket on their opener. That was the reason behind the stuck door, even when the motor was turned on. After replacing it with the new gear and sprocket assembly, we got the door working again in no time. The client was glad that we were able to do such quick work on this job. Finally, they could access the garage once more without needing to call for unreliable repairs offered in the area.

With so many different parts involved in each garage door opener, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. Eventually, you will need to replace these worn or broken parts. In this case, we responded to a client call with a broken gear and sprocket. We will explain below how we fix this common opener repair.

How to Replace Worn Gears in a Garage Door Opener

If you hear the motor running, but the door is not moving, it is likely due to shredded plastic gears. The good news is that fixing this issue is easy and affordable. It should not take more than an hour of your time. To inspect and replace the gears, follow these steps:

Prepare the garage door opener.

Before you start, unplug the garage door opener and pull the emergency release rope. Remove the cover from the opener once the garage door is closed by hand.

Check the gears.

Examining the white plastic gears is necessary. Are their edges worn down or shredded? Replacement is needed in either case. Look for the make and model of your garage door opener, then search for a new gear kit. You can choose from different options on Amazon and other online retailers. Their prices range from around $18 to $30. To save waiting time, you may visit a local garage door opener dealer who should have a gear kit available. Inside the package are usually two fresh gears, some washers, and grease. Some kits include step-by-step instructions, while others provide only minimal guidance – hence this tutorial exists.

Gather all the tools you need.

You need the following tools for a typical gear replacement:

• Hammer

• Flathead screwdriver

• 1/8-inch Allen wrench

• 1/4-inch nut driver

• 3/8-inch nut driver or socket

• 5/16-inch nut driver or socket, with extension

• 5/32-inch punch

Unscrew the circuit board.

It may be necessary to gain access to the circuit board to work on certain garage door openers. Simply take out the screws and let the board hang loosely. That will provide a larger area for repairs.

Loosen the chain.

A tensioning rod holds the chain in place. To loosen the chain, you need to use a wrench to loosen the nut on the rod. Keep in mind that you will require another tool, such as pliers, to prevent the chain from spinning.

Remove the gear assembly.

Take out the screws fixing the gear assembly to its place. Pull out the entire unit. You will then need to detach the helical gear from its shaft. A pin secures it, and you can tap a small punch with a hammer to disconnect it. In case of trouble taking out that pin, apply some WD-40 on it and wait for it to sink in. To release the worm gear connected to the motor shaft, unscrew the set screws of its collar using a hex wrench. Slide off both washers and gear before taking away the retaining screws of the motor.

Ready, set, assemble.

Attach the new worm gear to the shaft and reattach the motor assembly. Spread a thin layer of grease included in the kit on the helical gear, then reassemble it back into place. Next, tighten up the chain as stated in the manual. Once all the pieces are in place, put the cover back on your garage door opener. Plug it in, and you can use your newly functioning device.
